Thomas Bein received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Hamburg (Germany) and the Catholic University Leuven (Belgium) in 1984. He continued his studies as Visiting Scientist at the DuPont Central Research and Development Department in Wilmington, DE (USA). From 1986 to 1991 he was Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque (USA). In 1991 he joined Purdue University (Indiana) as Associate Professor, and was promoted to Full Professor of Chemistry in 1995. In 1999 he was appointed Chair of Physical Chemistry at the University of Munich (LMU) (Germany), where he also served as Director of the Department of Chemistry.
He has recently won an ERC Advanced Grant entitled “Electroactive Donor-Acceptor Covalent Organic Frameworks”. 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Mesostructured Materials Association, 2020 Elhuyar-Goldschmidt Award of the Royal Spanish Chemical Society (RSEQ). Presently he is LMU-Coordinator of the newly funded National Excellence Cluster “e-conversion”. He is Member of the Editorial Boards of the following scientific journals (past and present): Chemistry of Materials, Microporous Materials, Journal of Porous Materials (from 1997), Chemical Communications, ACS Nano (from 2011), Journal of the American Chemical Society (from 2019), Matter (Cell Press, from 2019), ACS Applied Energy Materials (from 2020)
